Back in January, we announced the start of early registration for Google I/O (our annual developer conference), and our team was excited to publish our new website for this year’s event. Today, we’re excited to give you a quick update on what’s in store for this year’s Google I/O and a brief look at what we’ve announced in the past five weeks.

63 sessions to be led by the engineering teams behind all the products to be featured at I/O, including Android, Google Chrome, Google Web Toolkit and Google Wave. We’ll have over 80 sessions listed by May.

58 companies are listed on the Developer Sandbox page, and we expect over 150 companies to participate in the Sandbox at I/O.

99 speakers, including Google engineers and prominent web development experts from other companies.

We introduced our very first I/O BootCamp, which sold out in just two days.

Of course, some things will stay under wraps until the event itself, but we’re excited to share some Google I/O planning details with you in advance.

We’ll be teaming up with Maker Faire again this year for our After Hours evening party. Google I/O attendees will get to preview some of the amazing DIY projects that will be showcased at Maker Faire in San Mateo just a couple of days after I/O, and discounted Maker Faire tickets will be available during After Hours. We’ve also invited the organizers of Gadgetoff. They’ll be bringing along exciting, interactive gadgets, robots and vehicles.

Whether you’re already developing apps using products like App Engine, or wondering how to get started on your first Android app, we hope to see you at Google I/O in May.

Last November we launched the iGoogle Gadget Dashboard, a tool to give our gadget developers more insight into how their gadget is used in the wild. For starters, we gave developers the ability to track their user count, pageviews, canvas views all over time, as well as the geographic distribution of their users. When we launched we promised more to come, and we’re pleased to announce the release of several of the most requested features by our developer community.

You may have already noticed the newest additions to the dashboard, which we rolled out over the last week. Developers can now subscribe to their gadget’s directory comments with their favorite RSS reader, so it’s easy to stay current with your user’s concerns and desires. If you’re a developer with a lot of gadgets, we’ve added sorting options so you can keep gadgets ordered in the most useful way. Finally and for the first time, developers can easily submit and withdraw gadgets from the iGoogle directory, giving them even greater control over their presence on iGoogle.

We’re firm believers in the principle that empowering our developers is the best way to bring a great iGoogle experience to our users, so we’ll be listening to our developer community about the tools and data they need the most and the dashboard will continue to improve. In the meantime, you can play with the new version at: http://code.google.com/igoogle/dashboard/

We’ve learned that when performing a search on Google, people sometimes forget to separate words with spaces. Moreover, people often mistakenly repeat a letter within a single word. For instance, when writing the query [amazingly beautiful poem], you might write it as [amazingly beautiifullpoem].

These types of errors are much more common in languages like Arabic, where most of the letters are cursive. That means that the shapes of the letters change, based on the position of the letter in the word (initial, middle, final or isolated). Moreover, some Arabic letters are considered word breaks, meaning that the following letter must be in an “initial” shape. In other words, if the last letter of one word is a word break, the following word may not be separated with a space.

For example, the queries [وزارةالتعليم] and [وزارة التعليم] have an identical meaning (Ministry of Education) and they’re both written in a common form for Arabic documents. But they have different, albeit correct, formats — the first query is written as a single word, while the second is written as two. Google needs to understand that while they’re written differently, they mean the same thing and should yield the exact same search results. In this example, both queries were written correctly, just in different formats. But sometimes people just make errors — like repeating the same letter twice. For example, you might write [راائعة الجماال], repeating the letter “ا” twice in both query words. In this case the correct spelling should be [رائعة الجمال]. It’s important that Google search recognizes your query — despite spelling errors.

To address issues like this, we recently developed a search ranking improvement that targets certain Arabic queries. Our algorithm employs rules of Arabic spelling and grammar along with signals from historical search data to decide when to leave out spaces between words or when to remove unnecessarily repeated letters. Now, when you type a query leaving out spaces or repeating a letter, we’ll return better results based not only on what you typed, but also on what our algorithm understands is the “correct” query. For example, here’s what happens when you type [قصيدة راائعةالجماال] ([amazingly beautiful poem] in Arabic) with repeated letters and dropped spaces between words.

As you can see, the Google results contain the corrected query, the terms قصيدة رائعة الجمال, in bold.

For most people, this might seem like a small enhancement. But for us, it’s a big change. Our tests show we’ve improved search for 10% of Arabic language queries. Which, when you think about it, is a lot of people.

Go to any PHP help forum and you’ll be sure to see many bad practises, innocent misconceptions and blatant no nos. None of us are perfect and none of us started off writing great code. We have all had that moment where we looked back on a script that we wrote years ago and thought “what the hell was I thinking?”. But it is a process. You make mistakes, you learn from those mistakes and then you move on.

One of the most important structural patterns is the Composite one: its goal is managing a hierarchy of objects where both leaf objects and composition of other objects conform to a common interface. This hierarchy is usually constituted by part-whole relationships (often composition in the strict sense or aggregation), and it can be viewed as a tree.

2010 is the year we dive into open source design. We’ve dipped our toes in this pool before (icon contest, graphic design component for Trac tickets, header refresh contest, etc.), but this year we’re going to cannonball and make a big splash. Here’s what you need to know if you want to get involved.

A list for all seasons. Developers have the wp-hackers mailing list to discuss core and plugin code. Sometimes UI/UX stuff comes up and gets discussed there, but there is a whole universe of discussion around navigation labels, gradients, button styling, layouts, alignment, etc. that would be clutter on wp-hackers. Designers need a list to call their own, and now we have one. You can sign up for the wp-ui list to discuss ways to improve the interface or user experience of WordPress, and to discuss progress on design-related projects for the open source project, like the design challenges we’re going to have.

Design Challenges. We learned a lot from the icon design and header refresh contests, and we want to do these kind of open design challenges on a regular basis to give UI/UX designers who want to contribute to the WordPress open source project more opportunities to do so. If we could do one per month, that would be ideal, keeping the challenges relatively bite-sized to allow potential contributors an easy way to get involved at first. As each challenge is posted, people can use the list to bounce ideas off each other and work toward optimal solutions. I’m hoping the design challenges will evolve to be less contest and more collaboration. We’ll announce the first one before the end of January, so if you’re interested, please sign up for the list! (Hint: one will likely be a touch up to the Right Now dashboard module, to improve the information design, and there will be a couple of screen layout challenges coming up as well.)

Distributed Usability Testing. We started to try this out last year, and several dozen usability professionals volunteered to help get the program going, but a combination of scheduling and infrastructure issues combined to stall the progress. Having the “UI/UX contributor team” infrastructure in place, starting with the mailing list, will make it much easier to get this project going again.

Chit-chat. The weekly developer chats in IRC at #wordpress-dev have been very productive. We’ve created an IRC room at #wordpress-ui on irc.freenode.com so that we can have the same kind of “water cooler” for UI/UX contributors as for core code contributors. In addition to being a place where you can drop in and discuss core UI/UX (note: this room will not be a place to discuss the design of blog themes, it’s to discuss the design of the WordPress application itself), we’ll set up a weekly chat. Choosing a day and time for the chats will probably be the first discussion on the mailing list.

A blog of our own. Once again, taking a page from the code contributor infrastructure, we’ll set up a blog for UI/UX updates, announcements, progress reports, etc. This will be on WordPress.org in the nearish future, and will be announced to the mailing list when it is live.

So, if you want to become a contributor to core WordPress by using your design skills, join the wp-ui mailing list and get ready for a fun year!
